4 Commonly Forgotten Items When Moving

Now where did I put those keys…

Moving house is a chaotic process. Packing up everything you own in an organised and thorough manner is difficult for even the most experienced packers and movers. Using a Pack and Wrap service can help you make sure your stuff is packed correctly and organised to be moved, however your most important items are often the ones that are forgotten because they’re the items you set aside to manage yourself.

Here are a few often forgotten items:

Keys.  House and car keys are easy to misplace even on a normal day. On your moving day you often have two sets of keys to manage for both your old and new property, meaning they’re twice as likely to be lost. Always put your keys either in your purse or on your person. If your keys accidently get packed in some unknown box at the back of the moving truck, it will seriously derail your move.

Food. Whether on purpose or by accident, a lot of people leave food in their refrigerators. This is problematic because if you have freezer section, your refrigerator needs to be unplugged and defrosted ahead of time. Once your fridge has been moved to its new location, it shouldn’t be plugged back in for at least 2 hours (though some recommend waiting 24 hours). This means your perishable items will not keep through your move unless you’ve made alternate arrangements for them. Do not leave food in the fridge, your removalists are not responsible for these items, they will go bad and you will be left with a mess.

Kitchen cabinets. Often, one or two kitchen cabinets are left to pack last, thinking you will just throw that cereal and plastic cutlery in a bag before you leave. These items then end up forgotten in the last minute rush. While these aren’t the most important items, they are easy to forget about, so don’t leave them until the last minute because you won’t remember.

The first night box. These aren’t necessarily items that get left behind as they are items that people forget to set aside. We recommend packing a clearly labeled box with necessities for your first night in your new home so that you don’t have to go digging through every box to find what you need. These items can include toiletries, some clean clothes, your phone and charger, and some towels.

Keeping track of everything during your move is a challenge. Ask your removalists for additional recommendations for organising and try to focus on your most important items, like your keys, and try not to worry too much about how the rest will fall together.
